Pre Wedding Day Experimental Portraits

When discussing where to do Tiffany and Kevin’s engagement photos, they mentioned wanting to do really creative portraits. Although they didn’t think the schedule on their wedding day would allow for much experimental portraits. After a little brainstorming, we decided we would do their engagement session at the same venue as their wedding; The Windsor Arms.

We were mutually inspired by the movie In the Mood for Love, and pulled inspiration from the lighting and different compositions in the movie.

The proper way to execute this idea and to get a similar feel to the move was to use only 35mm film, and they agreed.

All of these were shot with my trusty Leica M6, and the black and white photographs were taken with a Contax G2.

I think this is a good example of how different cameras and films produce different moods. The black and white film (Kodak Trix 400) is a little jarring, and editorial. While the color film (Kodak Portra 400) feels more cinematic and romantic. I always try to remember when planning a shoot, that the choice in film can compliment the outfits and location.

At the end of the year, I like to go through the shoots I’ve done throughout the year. That way I can re-calibrate, and figure out the direction I’d like to head into for to the next year.

Film has a pull on me, and I need to shoot more of it next year.
